My mom, dad, and two younger siblings took off early this morning for a week long trip to Denver. They only made it to Utah. My mom's 2011 Chrysley 300 (identical to the one pictured) broke down on the side of the road.
I suspect the alternator failed. They said they lost power to everything. They couldn't even close the windows to stop the salt-on-the-wound rainstorm from getting into the cabin. They said they briefly regained power, were able to start the car, and then promptly shut it down because reasons.
A cop pulled my dad over for speeding prior to it breaking down and commented on the car smelling like burning.
They called roadside assistance and I believe they're on route to pick them up from the middle of nowhere Utah. Luckily the car is still a few months from being out of warranty.
I hope they're not stuck in Utah for too long, and I hope that Chrysler does the decent thing and sets them up with a hotel room and loaner, at least for duration of the repairs (Subaru does this), because fuck this shit.
Anyone got any ideas on what's up?
UPDATE 7:24PM PST: Tow truck is an hour away. They've still got power. Car does start, so I'm sure it isn't the alternator now.
They're using the car to keep phones charged.

Now, I'll bet your WRX would not have left you stranded.
How many miles did it have on it? That's strange for such a new car to just break down.

Sorry to hear that, maybe the belt went? Are they at altitude as well?

Sounds like an electrical short, gl getting it found quickly.

When a car is disabled and leaves you stranded (especially in that environment), not only do you lose trust in that car, you lose trust in the entire brand. I know it's not rational for one to paint the entire brand with such a broad brush stroke, but can you really blame anyone?

I'm not sure. They want to limit their conversations to preserve cell phone battery at least until the tow arrives.

Then that's really strange. Hopefully it'll get sorted out soon.

It's a Sunday. I highly doubt it'll even be looked at today.
This has really thrown a monkey wrench into their vacation. :(

Ah man, that really sucks. Sorry to hear it.

If someone smelled burning, then a circuit likely went. There isnt much to impede the belt. As for what burned, not sure. It would be serious enough to be smelled. Might have picked up something under the car...

They're exploring Colorado.
Be proud! Your state is pretty.
Though, yeah, Denver isn't that special. I went for a business trip not too long ago. It's a cute little city filled with like 90% Subarus, but it pales in comparison to the natural beauty that surrounds it.
